KGB: a tested circuit board used as a reference standard
A known good board, or KGB, is a circuit board of confirmed correct function used as a baseline for troubleshooting and testing. In production and service environments, technicians compare a suspect board against a KGB to isolate whether failures stem from component defects, solder joints, circuit design, or firmware. The KGB serves as the gold standard: if an identical board under identical conditions works correctly, the problem lies elsewhere in the system.
KGBs are typically selected from early production runs or boards that have passed rigorous qualification testing. They are documented, stored carefully to prevent degradation, and sometimes potted or conformal-coated to preserve their state. A KGB for a complex multilayer board with surface-mount components may cost significantly more than a standard unit, but the cost is justified by the diagnostic certainty it provides. Without a known good reference, determining whether a failure is board-level or systemic becomes time-consuming and error-prone.
In high-volume manufacturing, KGBs are used at incoming inspection, in-circuit test stations, and functional test benches. In field service, a technician may carry a KGB for a frequently repaired assembly to quickly rule out the board as the fault source. Some organizations maintain KGBs for legacy boards no longer in production, since replacement components may be unavailable or unreliable. The term also applies to processor modules, memory cards, and other replaceable assemblies in industrial control systems, telecom infrastructure, and defense electronics.
The relationship between KGB and test coverage is crucial. A KGB proves the board can work; it does not prove all failure modes are detectable. A board may pass all standard tests yet fail under thermal stress, humidity, or vibration conditions not replicated in the baseline testing. KGBs are therefore refreshed periodically, especially for boards used in harsh environments, and comparison against a KGB is always paired with other diagnostics rather than treated as a final answer.
