A soil stack is a vertical pipe running through a building from the underground sewer connection up through the roof. It serves two critical functions: it carries waste and soil water downward to the main drain, and it allows air to enter the drainage system from above, preventing vacuum conditions that would cause traps to lose their seals and allow sewer gases into occupied spaces.
The pipe itself is typically 3 or 4 inches in diameter for residential work, made from cast iron, PVC, or copper. In modern construction, PVC has become dominant because it resists corrosion, is lighter, easier to install, and costs less than cast iron. The stack must be supported at intervals (typically every 4 feet for vertical runs) and must slope slightly at branch connections to maintain proper drainage velocity, usually 2 to 10 feet per second depending on the pipe size and type of waste.
Every fixture that drains into the stack, toilet, sink, or shower, has its own trap (typically a P-trap or S-trap) that holds standing water to form a seal. Without the vent function of the soil stack, draining water from one fixture can create negative pressure that siphons the seal from adjacent traps, breaking the gas barrier. Conversely, if pressure builds in the system, sewer gases can push past traps and enter the building. The vent opening at the roof must be sized proportionally to the stack and kept clear of obstructions and ice.
The term soil refers specifically to human waste in plumbing terminology, distinguishing this pipe from the waste stack (which carries gray water from sinks and showers) or the vent stack (which carries only air). In practice, many modern systems combine these functions into a single stack, though the distinction remains important for code compliance and troubleshooting. Older British and European buildings often use the term soil pipe for the same component.
Common failures include blockages where grease, paper, or mineral deposits accumulate; frost closures where the roof vent freezes in winter; and seal loss when traps dry out in unused fixtures or when the vent stack is undersized. Improper slope (too steep or too shallow) causes either scouring of the pipe interior or accumulation of solids. Professional plumbers test drainage systems by running water from multiple fixtures simultaneously to confirm the stack can handle peak load without pressure buildup or backup.
