A spade is a flat, blade-shaped electrical terminal crimped or soldered onto the end of a conductor. The terminal has a wide, thin rectangular head with a single slot at its tip, designed to slide under a screw or bolt for quick connection and disconnection. It is the standard termination method for many industrial and utility applications where flexibility and accessibility matter more than the smallest physical footprint.

Spades are manufactured in multiple sizes to match wire gauges and bolt diameters. A No. 8 spade, for example, accommodates an 8-32 bolt, while larger industrial applications use spades rated for 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch, or 1/2 inch hardware. The conductor is crimped into a tubular barrel at the base of the spade using a hydraulic or hand crimper with a die matched to the wire gauge. This method creates a gas-tight joint stronger than soldering alone and is preferred in high-vibration or high-temperature environments.

Spades appear throughout power distribution systems: utility switchgear, generator control cabinets, transformer secondary connections, and battery banks. In the field, they offer clear visible confirmation of connection state and allow operators to add or remove circuits without tools beyond a wrench. The design also tolerates minor misalignment and allows multiple spades to stack under one bolt for parallel runs or branch taps.

Corrosion at the barrel-to-conductor joint is the primary reliability risk, especially in outdoor or salt-spray environments. Inadequate crimp pressure, use of the wrong die size, or moisture trapped under heat shrink tubing can accelerate degradation. In high-current applications, loose spades create arcing and burn marks; torque specification on the mounting bolt is critical and often overlooked in field assembly.

The term 'spade' derives from the tool's visual resemblance to a spade shovel, with the conductor inserted like a handle into the flat blade head. In some trade contexts it is called a 'spade lug' or 'spade terminal'. The design predates modern connector families like DT and deutsch connectors, and remains in use because its simplicity, cost, and field-accessibility make it reliable for applications where the circuit is not frequently mated and disconnected.
