Spade: From Shovel to Socket

The common digging tool and the electrical connector share a name because they share a shape, but one breaks ground and the other breaks circuits.

To most people, a spade is a flat-bladed shovel used for digging, edging, or turning soil. It has been that for centuries. The word itself comes from Greek spade, a type of blade, and the tool is one of the oldest implements in human hands.

In energy and utilities work, a spade is something entirely different: a flat, blade-shaped electrical connector crimped or soldered to the end of a wire or cable. The connector consists of a thin rectangular metal tab with a single hole at one end, designed to slide onto a terminal post or fasten under a screw. Spades come in various widths and thicknesses to accommodate different conductor gauges and voltage ratings. They terminate low-voltage circuits in switchgear, control panels, battery systems, and test equipment where reliability and easy disconnection matter.

The resemblance is purely visual. The metal tab of the electrical spade is flat and blade-like, instantly recalling the profile of a digging spade seen edge-on. Engineers named it that way because the shape was obvious and memorable, and because the same naming impulse that calls a tool a wrench or a lug prefers objects that resemble what they are called.

This is not the only electrical adapter with a tool name. The world of connectors is full of such borrowings: you will find pins, jacks, plugs, and lugs in electrical work, each named after a familiar object. The spade stands out because the metaphor is so clean and the tool so ancient that it feels almost natural to find it on a transformer terminal.
