spin out

To cause one's vehicle to rotate about the yaw axis while skidding, such that the vehicle's longitudinal axis is no longer aligned with its direction of linear motion; or to experience such behavior from one's vehicle.

spin out: losing grip, losing direction

A spin out occurs when a vehicle loses traction and rotates about its vertical axis, so the car's nose and tail swing sideways while it skids. The vehicle is moving forward but pointed perpendicular or even backward to its actual direction of travel. On dry pavement this happens when steering input or throttle input exceeds what the tires can grip; on wet or loose surfaces it requires much less provocation.

The mechanics differ by drivetrain. Rear-wheel-drive cars often spin when the rear tires break loose under hard acceleration or when lifting off the throttle mid-corner, causing the rear to overtake the front; this is sometimes called oversteer. Front-wheel-drive cars spin less readily during acceleration but can spin when braking hard into a turn, since the front tires are doing both stopping and steering work. All-wheel-drive platforms are more resistant to spinning because power and braking are distributed across four tires.

Causes and consequences

Rain, snow, ice, gravel, and loose asphalt cut grip dramatically. Worn tires, suspension geometry out of specification, and uneven weight distribution also provoke spins. Driving too fast for conditions is the human factor in the majority of cases. A spin can be arrested by steering in the direction the rear is moving (into the skid) and avoiding hard braking, but many drivers freeze or steer the wrong way, extending the spin and raising collision risk.

The term is rooted in the rotational motion itself: the car spins like a top. In racing, a spin is logged as a minor incident; multiple spins or a spin into a barrier means race termination. On public roads, a spin out of control is a precursor to accidents. Winter driving courses teach counter-steering technique specifically to recover from spins before they become crashes.
