A spoiler is a fixed or adjustable aerodynamic surface mounted on a vehicle, typically at the rear, that disrupts airflow to reduce lift and increase downforce on the wheels. At highway speeds and especially in racing, air pressure differences create an upward force that reduces tire contact with the road. A spoiler breaks up this low-pressure zone behind the vehicle, trading some aerodynamic efficiency for better stability and traction.

The term spoiler originates from its function: it spoils the airflow that would otherwise generate lift. Drag increases slightly, but the benefit in handling and braking stability outweighs the cost in fuel economy or top speed for most performance vehicles. A simple fixed rear spoiler or lip generates downforce across a range of speeds with no moving parts. Adjustable wing designs, common in motorsport, allow drivers or engineers to tune downforce for specific track conditions or weather.

Spoilers come in two main forms: passive fixed devices bolted to the trunk lid or integrated into the rear fascia, and active wings with adjustable flaps or variable geometry. Fixed spoilers work best at consistent speeds; adjustable designs suit variable-speed environments. Material choices range from ABS plastic on economy cars, to carbon fiber on performance and racing machines. Height, angle, and length all affect the downforce generated, with steeper angles producing more grip but also more drag.

The distinction between a spoiler and a wing matters in the trade. A spoiler typically sits flush or nearly flush with the bodywork and generates downforce mainly through flow disruption. A wing is a separate airfoil with upper and lower surfaces, mounted on pylons, producing downforce through pressure differential like an inverted airplane wing. Both reduce lift, but a wing is more aggressive and creates more drag.

Poor spoiler design or installation causes unpredictable aerodynamic behavior: vortex shedding creates side-to-side forces, or the device produces lift instead of downforce if the angle is wrong. At low speeds, spoilers add weight and drag without benefit. Corrosion at mounting points is common on fixed spoilers exposed to salt and weather. Racing teams spend considerable effort optimizing spoiler geometry for their specific vehicles and circuits.
