A spire is a simple but critical component in blasting: a tube or cord filled with a fast-burning material that carries flame from an ignition source to a powder charge or explosive. In quarrying and underground mining, the spire bridges the gap between the detonator or ignition point and the main charge, ensuring the flame reaches the explosive reliably. Without it, the blast cannot reliably initiate.

Historically, spires were hollow reeds, plant stalks, or rolled paper tubes filled with saltpetre, charcoal, and sulphur. These materials would burn at a predictable rate, giving the blast crew time to move clear before detonation. Modern spires are still tube-based but manufactured with precision: the core is a fast-burning composition, and the outer casing is paper or card stock. The burn rate is engineered to be fast enough to reliably transmit flame but slow enough to allow safe evacuation. Burn duration is typically measured in tens of milliseconds.

In use, a spire is inserted into a hole or cavity in the charge, or laid alongside a powder train. The ignition source, historically a lit match or fuse end, is applied to the open end of the spire. Once lit, the flame travels through the tube and ignites the main charge. The tube casing contains the burning material and controls the burn rate; if the casing is torn or the composition is damp, the spire will burn erratically or fail entirely, leaving a misfire.

Distinction from other igniters

A spire differs from a safety fuse in both construction and function. A safety fuse is a flexible cord with a core of fast-burning powder surrounded by multiple protective layers; it is designed for long, safe carries and for timing delays. A spire is rigid, shorter, and meant only for immediate flame transmission at the blast site. The spire's name likely derives from its shape and function: thin and pointed, it reaches into or through the charge like a architectural spire reaching skyward.

In modern mining and quarrying, spires have largely been superseded by detonating cord (detonator), blasting caps, and shock tubes, which offer more reliable initiation, better timing control, and safer handling. However, spires remain in use in smaller-scale blasting operations and in regions where supply chains or regulation favour simpler, less expensive systems. Understanding the spire's role is valuable for anyone working with older blasting documentation, decommissioned quarries, or traditional powder-based operations.
