To spoil an aircraft wing is to deliberately destroy or reduce the lift it generates by deploying a spoiler surface, a hinged panel that rises up from the wing upper surface. This forces air to separate from the wing rather than flow smoothly over it, killing lift and increasing drag at the same time. Pilots spoil wings during descent, approach, and landing to control speed and descent rate without pitching the nose down excessively.
Spoilers are typically mounted in pairs on the upper surface of each wing, and operate in two modes. In flight spoilers, they deploy symmetrically on both wings during descent or when the pilot needs to shed altitude quickly without gaining airspeed. In landing mode, they deploy fully and asymmetrically as needed to help kill lift during the landing flare, allowing the aircraft to settle onto the runway rather than float. Some aircraft use spoilers in combination with speed brakes, additional panels deployed from the fuselage or wing to increase drag without reducing lift as dramatically.
The effectiveness of a spoiler depends on wing design, flight speed, and angle of deflection. At high speeds, even small spoiler deflections produce significant drag and lift reduction. At low speeds near landing, spoilers must deploy fully to be effective. Modern transport aircraft typically have spoiler panels that deflect 25 to 60 degrees from the wing surface. Premature deployment or asymmetrical spoiler operation in cruise can cause unwanted wing drop or lateral instability.
Spoiler failure or sluggish response is a maintenance concern because it directly affects aircraft handling and descent performance. Mechanical jamming, hydraulic fluid loss, actuator failure, or control linkage corrosion can prevent normal spoiler operation. Asymmetrical spoiler deployment, where one wing spoiler extends further than the other due to friction or wear, causes rolling trim problems and forces the pilot to use aileron input to maintain level flight. Maintenance checks verify free play in spoiler hinges, hydraulic pressure delivery, and electrical or pneumatic command actuation.
The term spoil comes from the literal action of spoiling the airflow, rendering the wing's aerodynamic shape ineffective. This is distinct from flaps, which change wing camber to generate more lift at low speeds, and from ailerons, which roll the aircraft. Spoilers sit between the two functions: they work like ailerons when deployed asymmetrically for roll control, but their primary job is to spoil lift symmetrically. Older aircraft used dive brakes or simply accepted longer descents; modern high-wing-loading transports depend on spoilers for safe descent management.
