A standage is a body of water that collects in the lowest part of a mine working, typically in the sump or floor depression where gravity naturally draws all seepage, filtration, and drainage. Unlike a deliberately engineered settling pond, it forms passively wherever the mine floor is lowest, and its depth and volume depend entirely on the balance between water ingress and the rate of pumping or bailing it away.
In coal mines and metalliferous operations, standage accumulates from several sources: rainwater entering through shafts and adits, groundwater seeping through the coal seam or rock face, and water released during excavation of wet strata. The volume can range from a few thousand gallons in a small worked-out section to millions of gallons in deep mines with poor drainage. Mine operators have always treated standage as a nuisance and expense, since the water must be lifted to surface continuously to prevent the working from flooding.
Pumping and maintenance
Historically, standage was managed by hand pumps, horse-driven pumps, or steam engines; later mines installed centrifugal or reciprocating pumps fed by pipes or channels cut into the mine floor. The standage itself was often the only available source of water in the mine for drinking and washing, though its quality was poor. Regular pumping also served as an informal measure of mine health: an unexpectedly rapid rise in standage signalled a new water break, a dangerous ingress of water from above or from a neighboring worked area.The term is now largely obsolete, replaced by more precise modern vocabulary such as mine sump or mine water. However it persists in historical mining records and older technical literature, particularly in British and European mining texts from the 18th and 19th centuries. The word likely derives from the idea of water standing still or stationary at the lowest point of the mine.
