An equigranular rock is one in which the mineral crystals or grains have roughly uniform size throughout the specimen. This is distinct from porphyritic textures, where large crystals (phenocrysts) are embedded in a finer-grained matrix, or inequigranular rocks, where grain sizes vary widely without clear patterning. Equigranular texture develops when cooling or crystallization occurs at a relatively constant, moderate rate, allowing all minerals to grow for similar durations before solidification completes.

In igneous rocks, equigranular texture is common in granites that cooled slowly underground; typical grain sizes in such rocks range from 1 to 10 millimeters. Basalt and rhyolite that cooled rapidly at the surface seldom show equigranular texture because there is insufficient time for uniform crystal growth. Metamorphic rocks, particularly schists and gneisses that recrystallized under steady temperature and pressure, often display equigranular or near-equigranular textures as well.

Practical significance in quarrying and processing

Equigranular rocks tend to break more uniformly than their inequigranular counterparts, which is advantageous in dimension stone quarrying and aggregate crushing. A granite with uniform grain size fractures along grain boundaries in a more predictable manner, reducing wasteful shattering. Conversely, rocks with mixed grain sizes often develop stress concentrations at the boundaries between large and small grains, leading to irregular breakage patterns and lower yields of usable stone.

The term originated from the Latin aequus (equal) and granulum (small grain), reflecting the straightforward visual description geologists apply when examining thin sections or hand samples under magnification. It remains standard in mining geology reports, quarry site assessments, and aggregate specifications where texture classification directly influences extraction method selection and product quality.
