A garland is a metal channel, typically formed from sheet steel or cast iron, that runs around the inner circumference of a mineshaft just below the collar or at intervals down the shaft wall. Its sole purpose is to intercept water that runs down the inside face of the shaft and direct it into a sump or drain system before it can reach the working levels below.

Water enters vertical shafts from multiple sources: surface runoff seeping past the collar seal, groundwater percolating through fractured rock, condensation in cold climates, and sometimes dripping from hoisting equipment or pipework above. Without a garland, this water would cascade directly into the shaft sump at the bottom, creating mud, slippery conditions on ladders and cage ways, corrosion of steel infrastructure, and operational hazards. By catching water early, a garland keeps the shaft column itself drier and channels seepage to a controlled outlet.

Garlands are typically U-shaped or V-shaped in cross-section, with edges turned up to prevent spillage under normal flow. They are bolted or welded to the shaft lining or timber sets at intervals, often every 30 to 50 metres in deep shafts. The collected water flows along the garland to a downpipe that connects to a sump pump or natural drainage route. In wet ground conditions, multiple garlands may be installed one above the other to catch water at different levels.

Maintenance and design considerations

A garland can become blocked by sediment, mineral deposits, or debris falling from above, forcing water to overflow and defeat its purpose. Regular inspection and flushing are necessary in high-flow conditions. The channel must be sized appropriately for the expected inflow; undersizing causes water to spill over the sides, while oversizing adds unnecessary weight and cost. Corrosion is a constant problem in wet shafts; galvanized or stainless steel garlands last longer than bare steel but cost more.

The term 'garland' is particular to mining; surface industries rarely use the word, though the principle is applied in other deep vertical structures. In hardrock mining, garlands are standard practice; in coal mining, wooden or concrete shaft linings may have integral guttering rather than bolt-on garlands. Proper garland design and maintenance are part of good shaft infrastructure and directly reduce emergency pump load in deep shafts.
