Standing crop is the total dry weight of all living plant material present in a field or managed ecosystem at a specific moment. It is measured in kilograms per hectare or tons per acre, and it represents what is actually growing and available, not what was harvested or what will grow later. For a grain crop at physiological maturity, standing crop includes the grain itself, the stalks, the leaves, and any other above-ground biomass still rooted in place.
The term matters because standing crop differs sharply from yield. Yield is what you remove and keep; standing crop is everything the plants have built. A wheat field might have a standing crop of 15 tons per hectare but a grain yield of only 8 tons per hectare if the stalks are thick and heavy. Measuring standing crop requires cutting sample plots, drying the material at 105 degrees Celsius to constant weight, and extrapolating across the field. It is destructive and time-consuming, so many growers estimate it instead.
Why farmers and agronomists care
Standing crop tells you how much total plant growth occurred, which is useful for assessing soil fertility, weather impact, and crop vigor across the season. It is also the starting point for calculating nutrient removal: if you know the standing crop and its nutrient content, you can estimate what nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium left the field with the harvest. For forage crops like alfalfa or grass, standing crop is nearly synonymous with forage yield because most of the plant is harvested.In rangeland and pasture management, standing crop is used to determine stocking rates and grazing capacity. If a pasture has only 2 tons per hectare of standing crop late in a drought, it cannot support the same number of animals as a well-watered pasture with 8 tons per hectare. Wildlife managers use standing crop to assess habitat quality and carrying capacity for deer, elk, and other herbivores.
The name reflects its literal meaning: crop material that is still standing upright in the field, in contrast to lodged (fallen) crop or harvested crop removed and lying elsewhere. It is distinct from net primary productivity, which is the rate of biomass accumulation over time, and from litter, which is dead plant material on the ground. Standing crop is a snapshot; productivity is a rate.
