A stempel is a horizontal timber or steel platform built into the side wall of a mineshaft, typically at intervals of 10 to 20 feet vertically. It serves dual purposes: as a step or foothold for workers climbing the shaft, and as a shelf or staging area for accumulating waste rock, timber props, or equipment during mining operations. The structure is anchored into the shaft walls using wooden cribbing or metal brackets driven into the surrounding rock.

The word stempel derives from German mining terminology, where "Stempel" refers to a prop or support timber. In English-speaking mining regions, the term became standard practice in deep shaft work, particularly in coal and metal ore extraction where vertical access shafts could reach hundreds of meters. Some operations used the term interchangeably with "lodging" or "intermediate platform," though stempel specifically describes a more minimal, integrated installation rather than a full staging level.

Construction and variants

Traditional stempels were hewn from pit timber, usually oak or similar dense wood capable of bearing concentrated loads. Modern installations use reinforced steel channels or I-beams, especially in mines deeper than 500 meters where the load from accumulated waste and worker traffic justifies the extra cost. Spacing and load capacity depend on shaft width and expected traffic; a single stempel might support 500 to 1000 kilograms before waste removal is required.

Stempels suffer primarily from decay and settlement. Wooden versions rot from groundwater seepage and require regular inspection; metal versions corrode and can twist under uneven loads if not properly shimmed during installation. Worker safety around stempels was historically poor, as loose rock and tools left on the platform created hazards for those passing below. Modern practice requires enclosing stempels with catch nets or guardrails in occupied shafts.

The stempel occupies a specific place in shaft infrastructure, distinct from the hoisting equipment, ventilation ducts, and pipe work that share the same space. In systems using internal cage guides, stempels are positioned to avoid interference; in open-shaft work, they must be robust enough to handle impact from falling tools or material. As automated hoisting became standard, stempels became less critical for access, but remain necessary in many older mines and in development work where temporary staging is essential.
