stereotomy: the craft of cutting stone and timber to fit

Stereotomy is the practical geometry of cutting three-dimensional solids, especially stone and timber, so that pieces fit together precisely at complex angles. A mason cutting a voussoir to fit in a curved arch, a carpenter cutting a timber joint where three members meet, or a stone-cutter preparing ashlar blocks for irregular surfaces are all performing stereotomy. The work demands understanding how planes intersect, how to translate a design into cutting lines on a block, and how to execute those cuts with hand tools or modern machinery.

In masonry, stereotomy appears most visibly in vaulted ceilings, curved archways, and hemispherical domes, where each wedge-shaped stone must be cut so its surfaces align with its neighbors and with the overall curve. A dome's voussoirs, for instance, radiate from a common center point; the cutter must shape each stone so the bed joints (the surfaces where stones touch) remain perpendicular to that radius. The art becomes highly specialized in complex forms like spiral staircases or ribbed vaults, where many planes meet at odd angles.

From drawing board to stone

Historically, stereotomy relied on full-scale drawings called épures, made on flat boards or floors. The mason would lay out the true shape of each cut surface at actual size, then transfer those lines to the stone block using templates and compasses. Modern practice combines geometric theory, scale drawings, and digital layout, but the principle remains: the cutter must visualize the solid in space and mark the lines to cut. Errors at this stage waste material and time, so accuracy in layout is as critical as accuracy in cutting.

The work divides between rough-cutting (which removes most waste, often with power saws or abrasive jets on modern sites) and fine-dressing (finishing surfaces to tolerance with hand tools or grinders). Stone density, grain, and internal flaws determine strategy. A mason cutting limestone in a straightforward arch may work quickly; one cutting a granite dome or an irregular intersection of barrel vaults works slowly, testing fit frequently and adjusting the cut incrementally.

Stereotomy remains essential wherever prefabricated elements cannot be used, especially in restoration work and in contemporary architecture that employs complex geometric forms. Training in the trade is uncommon in industrialized countries but persists in specialized masonry schools and in practices working with natural stone or timber in heritage contexts. The vocabulary survives in French architectural traditions and in technical stone-cutting guilds.
