A stereotype is a solid metal printing plate made by casting molten metal into a mould created from an original typeset or engraved surface. The process allows a printer to duplicate a page layout many times without resetting type by hand, and the resulting plates are more durable than the original type for long production runs. Stereotypes were standard in newspaper and book printing from the early 1800s until digital typesetting made them obsolete.
The workflow begins with the original raised surface, usually composed of metal type locked in a chase. A mould is formed by pressing a special papier-mâché or clay matrix against this surface under heat and pressure, creating a negative impression. Molten metal, typically an alloy of lead, tin, and antimony, is then poured into this mould. Once cool, the resulting plate is trimmed and mounted on a wooden base to type height (0.918 inches for English printing), ready to lock into a printing press.
Stereotypes came in several forms adapted to different presses. Flat stereotypes were rectangular plates used on platen presses and flatbed cylinders. Curved stereotypes were cast in a semi-cylindrical shape specifically for rotary presses, where they wrapped around the impression cylinder to print at high speed. Newspaper operations typically produced curved stereos from pages of set type, allowing the same content to print on multiple rotary presses simultaneously.
Common problems and materials
The metal composition directly affects durability and wear resistance. Higher tin content produced harder plates that resisted wear but were more brittle and prone to cracking if they absorbed repeated shock. Lead-dominated alloys were softer and wore faster but tolerated rough handling. Stereotypers constantly balanced these properties depending on the intended press speed and run length. Worn stereos showed visible type damage and required replacement or re-electrotyping.
The process had inherent limitations. Fine detail in the original type could be lost during moulding and casting. Undercuts in the original could trap mould material, producing casting flaws. The cost of mould materials and fuel for melting made stereotyping economical only for runs exceeding a few thousand impressions. This threshold determined whether a printer would justify setting original type or requesting stereo duplication.
