A stick clip is a mechanical fastener applied to waterproofing membranes using pressure-sensitive adhesive rather than screws, bolts, or penetrating anchors. It holds insulation boards, drainage mats, filter fabrics, and other lightweight components flat against the membrane surface, preventing them from sliding down sloped roofs or shifting under wind or thermal stress. The adhesive backing bonds directly to the waterproofing layer without puncturing it, eliminating the damage and potential water ingress that would result from mechanical fastening.
Stick clips typically consist of a plastic or metal base with a pressure-sensitive adhesive backing. The clip head features a tab or bracket designed to grip, capture, or cradle the material being retained. Common variants include simple U-shaped channels that hold insulation board edges, mushroom-head designs that clamp down on foam or mineral wool, and curved retainers for drainage board retention. Width and thickness vary by application; clips for thin filter fabric differ significantly from those securing rigid polyiso or mineral fiber insulation.
Application and performance
Installation requires a clean, dry membrane surface free of dust, debris, and incompatible sealants. The clip is pressed firmly into place, and the adhesive typically develops full strength over 24 to 48 hours depending on temperature and humidity. On flat roofs, they space at intervals along board edges and sometimes the field; on slopes, spacing becomes denser to counteract gravitational forces. The adhesive must be compatible with both the membrane type (TPO, PVC, EPDM, bitumen) and the material being retained; incompatible products cause delamination or slippage failures.
Wind uplift and thermal cycling are the primary failure modes. Clips inadequately spaced or installed over membrane seams, wrinkles, or soft spots can pull free during storms. Ultraviolet exposure degrades some adhesives over years, particularly on unshaded southern or western exposures. Adhesive migration or loss also occurs in extreme heat, causing creep in insulation boards. Waterproofing membranes that soften in warm weather may not provide adequate adhesive bond, requiring temporary mechanical fastening until conditions cool.
Stick clips occupy a middle ground between cost and performance compared to fully adhered systems and fully mechanically fastened systems. They avoid the labor and material costs of full adhesive application while offering faster installation than individual fastener placement. However, they depend on the integrity of the membrane surface and the compatibility of products; substituting untested adhesive clips or using them on incompatible substrates voids warranties and courts failures.
