Stratification is a pre-sowing treatment that exposes seeds to prolonged cold, moisture, or both, mimicking the winter conditions many species require before they will germinate in spring. In nature, seeds of temperate plants fall to the ground in autumn, spend months in moist soil at near-freezing temperatures, then sprout when warmth returns. Without this period, the seed coat and embryo remain metabolically locked, and germination fails no matter how much heat and water you provide. Stratification reproduces this enforced dormancy break in days or weeks instead of months.

Cold stratification, the most common method, involves mixing seeds with moist sand, peat, or vermiculite and holding them at 1 to 5 degrees Celsius for a set period, typically 4 to 12 weeks depending on species. The moisture must be consistent but not waterlogged; mold and rot kill dormant seeds quickly. Some growers use a refrigerator or cold frame; commercial seed producers may employ dedicated stratification chambers with precise humidity and temperature control. Warm stratification, used for a smaller subset of species, alternates between warm and cool temperatures to break dormancy. Scarification, mechanical or chemical abrasion of the seed coat, often accompanies cold stratification for species with hard shells like ash or cherry.

The physiological mechanism involves changes in hormone balance and enzyme activity triggered by the cold period. Gibberellins rise while abscisic acid drops, signaling to the seed that conditions are finally suitable for growth. Timing matters: seeds stratified too briefly remain dormant; those stratified too long may germinate prematurely or suffer reduced vigor. Each species has a specific window; apple seeds need about 60 days, lilac 120 days, while many wildflowers fall somewhere between.

Why stratification fails and how to prevent it

Seeds rot if the medium stays waterlogged or contaminated; seeds dry out if moisture drops too low; and seeds may germinate in the refrigerator if the temperature creeps above 10 degrees Celsius for extended periods. Commercial seed suppliers often pre-stratify seeds and note this on the packet. Small-scale growers must monitor conditions closely and keep stratifying seeds isolated from maturing seeds to avoid cross-contamination and premature sprouting. Starting stratification in late autumn and moving seeds to warmth in early spring aligns with natural timing and reduces management complexity.

The term comes from the layering of seeds between strata, or layers, of moist medium in stratification boxes or bags. It appears in forestry and horticulture standards, particularly in nursery manuals and seed catalogs for native plants and perennials. Seed banks and botanical gardens rely heavily on stratification to maintain genetic diversity and ensure reliable germination of collected specimens. Understanding which species require stratification, and for how long, is foundational knowledge for anyone producing seedlings or storing seed stock.
