This matters because hanging heavy cabinets, shelving, or television mounts requires anchoring into studs rather than relying on fasteners in hollow wall space, which cannot support significant loads.
Most modern stud finders use either capacitive sensing or electromagnetic induction. Capacitive models measure changes in electrical capacitivity as the sensor moves from drywall (lower capacitance) to wood framing (higher capacitance). These are generally more affordable and simpler to calibrate. Electromagnetic types detect ferrous metal, making them effective for metal studs or the steel fasteners within wood studs, though they require careful technique to avoid false readings from pipes or wiring running through walls.
Practical use and reliability
The device must be calibrated on bare wall surface before use. You press the power button while the sensor sits flat against the wall, away from any framing. The stud finder then learns the baseline density reading. When moved across the wall, it beeps or flashes LEDs when it crosses from empty space into the solid frame member. A second beep or signal indicates you have exited the stud. Stud spacing in most North American residential construction runs 16 inches or 24 inches centre-to-centre, which helps verify readings: if you find one stud, the next should appear predictably downstroke.
Accuracy depends on wall composition. Thick drywall, tile, or multiple layers of old plaster can reduce sensitivity and cause phantom signals. Metal lath in plaster walls triggers false positives. Moisture in the wall raises capacitance and confuses readings. Stud finders perform worst on concrete block or brick, which are uniformly dense. Studs directly behind surface irregularities such as seams or tape joints can produce ambiguous signals. For critical work, experienced framers mark studs with nail pops or by tapping and listening for the solid sound of framing before relying on electronic detection alone.

The device became common in home renovation and furniture installation from the 1980s onward as drywall construction standardized and electronic sensors miniaturized.
