A pocket-hole is a drilled cavity that runs at an angle, typically 15 degrees from vertical, through the thickness of one board and into an adjacent board. The angled hole accepts a self-tapping pocket screw, which draws the two pieces together and locks them in compression. The screw itself sits within the hole, hidden from view once the joint is complete. This joinery method has become standard in production furniture because it is fast, requires minimal skill, and produces joints strong enough for cabinet sides, table aprons, and face frames.
The key to the system is the pocket-hole bit, a specialized drill bit with a stepped design. The larger upper portion bores a cylindrical recess that accommodates the screw head; the smaller lower portion drills the pilot hole that guides the screw into the adjoining board. Pocket screws themselves are coarse-threaded fasteners, usually 1.25 inches or 1.5 inches long, with a square or Robertson drive and a undercut head that seats flush against the hole's upper edge. Bits and screws come in graduated sizes to match different board thicknesses, from 3/8 inch stock up to 1.5 inch solid wood.
The angled geometry is critical to performance. Because the hole runs at 15 degrees rather than perpendicular, the screw creates shear resistance across the wood grain and prevents the joint from racking sideways. The angle also allows the screw to be installed at speed with a handheld power drill without breaking through the far side of the receiving board. Pocket-hole jigs, commonly made of aluminum or plastic, clamp to the edge of a board and guide the bit at the correct angle while spacing holes at regular intervals, typically 4 to 8 inches apart depending on load.
Common problems and limitations
Pocket-holes fail when the receiving board is too thin, splits near the hole, or when the screw penetrates beyond the target depth and emerges visibly on the opposite face. Moisture swelling can cause the hole to enlarge and loosen the connection over time, particularly in humid environments or near water sources. The joint itself is relatively stiff but not as elegant as mortise and tenon or traditional dowel joinery, and the characteristic small recesses are often filled with wooden plugs or left visible depending on finish quality. In high-end cabinetry, pocket-holes are typically hidden on interior surfaces or on the back of panels.
The term derives from the visible pocket or recess left on the surface where the screw head sits. The technique emerged in the 1990s and was heavily promoted by the Kreg Tool Company, whose Kreg Jig became the industry standard. Today pocket-hole joinery dominates ready-to-assemble furniture, kitchen cabinet manufacturing, and commercial woodshop production. While purists sometimes dismiss it as inferior to traditional joinery, it solves real manufacturing problems: speed, repeatability, and a strong joint without complex machinery or highly trained labor.
