A substrate is the underlying material or surface on which another material is deposited, applied, or processed. In manufacturing, it is almost always passive: it exists to receive something else. The substrate takes no active part in the chemical or mechanical work; it simply stays in place while other materials adhere to it, etch into it, or build up on top of it.
Substrates vary wildly by industry. In semiconductor fabrication, a substrate is a wafer of silicon, typically 300 mm in diameter and 0.75 mm thick, onto which transistors and circuits are etched and deposited. In printed circuit boards, the substrate is usually epoxy resin reinforced with fiberglass, and traces of copper are either laminated to it or etched away from a copper layer bonded to it. In coating operations, the substrate might be steel sheet, aluminum, wood, glass, or plastic, depending on what needs protection or finish. In thin-film deposition, the substrate can be glass, ceramic, or metal foil.
Material and geometry matter
The choice of substrate material affects how well subsequent layers bond, how heat is conducted away, how the finished part performs, and how much it costs. Thermal expansion mismatch between substrate and coating can cause peeling or cracking during cooling. Surface preparation, including cleaning, roughening, priming, or chemical treatment, is often critical to adhesion and is considered part of substrate handling rather than separate work. A substrate's thickness, flatness, and cleanliness all determine whether the final product will meet specification.
The term comes from Latin substare, meaning to stand under or support. In biology and chemistry, it also means the material or surface on which an organism grows or on which a chemical reaction occurs; the manufacturing use extends this principle to industrial production. A substrate is load-bearing in a conceptual sense: it must be robust enough not to warp, degrade, or react with what is applied to it.
