subswitch

A simpler switch that is a component of a more complex switch, used in telephone exchanges or data routing.

subswitch: a slave switch inside a master switching system

A subswitch is a secondary switching element that operates under the control of a primary or master switch in a larger switching network. Rather than making independent decisions about call or data routing, the subswitch executes commands from a supervising control unit, handling the actual connection of individual lines or circuits to their destinations. This architecture allowed telephone exchanges and early data routing systems to scale efficiently by separating the intelligence (routing logic) from the execution (making the physical or electrical connections).

In telephone exchange systems, a subswitch typically handled a smaller subset of subscribers or trunk lines, say 100 to 500 lines, while a master switch coordinated multiple subswitches to manage thousands of connections. The master would determine where a call needed to go, then signal the appropriate subswitch to physically connect the caller's line to the outgoing trunk or to another subswitch feeding into the wider network. This hierarchical design reduced the complexity and cost of any single switch unit and made it easier to expand capacity by adding more subswitches under the same master control.

Electromechanical and electronic variants

Early subswitches were electromechanical, using stepping switches or crossbar arrays with electromagnets to open and close contacts. As telecommunications networks grew, electronic subswitches using relay matrices, then transistor arrays and integrated circuits, replaced mechanical designs. In data networking, the principle carried forward into packet switches and routers, where a high-capacity switching fabric (the subswitch function) forwards packets according to routing decisions made by a control processor (the master function).

Faults in a subswitch could affect all lines connected to it, making redundancy critical in large exchanges. Loss of control signalling between master and subswitch would orphan all connections under that subswitch's control, so telephone exchanges typically used multiple control paths and automatic fallback schemes. Similar concerns apply in modern network switches, where a faulty forwarding module (conceptually a subswitch) can trigger automatic traffic rerouting through adjacent modules.

The term subswitch is now historical in telephony, replaced by more specific modern terminology like line card, switching fabric, or forwarding module. However, the concept remains foundational to any large switching or routing system that splits control logic from switching execution, and the word is still encountered in technical literature on legacy systems and in educational texts on network architecture.
