Supplemental restraint system: airbags and beyond

A supplemental restraint system, or SRS, is a collection of safety devices that deploy automatically during a collision to reduce injury, working alongside seatbelts rather than replacing them. The most common SRS component is the airbag, which inflates in milliseconds when crash sensors detect sudden deceleration. Unlike seatbelts, which are always in place, SRS devices remain inactive until impact is detected, then provide a cushion or restraining force for a fraction of a second.

Modern vehicles typically deploy multiple airbags in a single crash. Frontal airbags protect the driver and front passenger from forward impact; side-impact or curtain airbags shield the chest and pelvis of outboard passengers; and knee bolsters protect the lower legs. Some systems now include rear-seat airbags and inflatable seatbelts that distribute restraining force across a wider body area. The decision to deploy depends on sensor input: accelerometers and pressure switches in the vehicle frame detect the severity, angle, and location of impact.

Deployment logic varies by vehicle and impact type. A frontal crash at 12 miles per hour or higher may trigger front airbags, while side-impact thresholds are typically lower because less energy is needed to cause injury. Modern systems use multiple sensors so that glancing blows or minor bumps do not unnecessarily deploy expensive devices. The entire inflation process takes 30 to 50 milliseconds, and the bag begins deflating almost immediately through vent holes.

Common failures include sensor degradation, electrical connector corrosion, and faulty clockspring mechanisms that carry signals to the steering wheel airbag. A deployed airbag leaves chemical residue and ruptures, making replacement necessary after any collision serious enough to trigger it. Diagnostic trouble codes for SRS faults appear in the vehicle's onboard computer and typically illuminate a dedicated warning light on the dashboard.

The name reflects the system's role in the broader crash protection strategy. Seatbelts alone were the primary restraint for decades; airbags were developed as a supplement to catch occupants in the critical gap between the start of deceleration and when the seatbelt fully engages. Regulatory bodies like NHTSA mandate SRS capability for all passenger vehicles, and insurance claims data consistently show that occupants protected by both seatbelts and airbags sustain fewer fatalities and serious injuries than those with either system alone.
