sway: how far a car rocks side to side
Sway is the side-to-side rocking motion of a vehicle's body as it navigates corners, responds to crosswinds, or travels over uneven road surfaces. It is measured as the maximum lateral displacement of the vehicle's center of gravity or, more practically, the peak-to-peak amplitude of oscillation at the roofline. A vehicle that sways excessively feels unstable and unpredictable; one that is well-controlled feels planted and responsive.
Sway is controlled primarily by the suspension system, particularly by the sway bar (also called an anti-roll bar or stabilizer bar). This is a torsion rod that connects the left and right suspension arms and resists the weight transfer that occurs during cornering. A stiffer sway bar reduces sway amplitude but can compromise ride comfort on bumpy surfaces. Softer settings increase comfort but allow greater body roll. Engineers tune sway bar diameter, material stiffness, and bushing hardness to balance handling response against passenger comfort.
Sway and suspension geometry
The overall stiffness of the suspension springs, the geometry of the control arms, and the ride height all influence how much sway a vehicle exhibits under a given cornering load. High-performance vehicles typically run stiffer springs and sway bars to reduce sway to under 5 degrees at the roofline during hard cornering. Family sedans may accept 7 to 10 degrees of sway for a softer, more compliant feel. Trucks and vehicles with high centers of gravity naturally experience greater sway because the mass is located farther from the roll axis.
Excessive sway is often a symptom of worn bushings, damaged springs, or a failed or disconnected sway bar link. Technicians diagnose sway problems through visual inspection of suspension components and by performing a sway test, in which the vehicle is rocked side to side by hand or by brake and throttle inputs to observe and measure the oscillation. Sway that occurs unprompted during normal driving, or that persists for more than two or three cycles after a disturbance, indicates a control problem.
In the broader context of vehicle dynamics, sway is related to roll, pitch, and yaw. Roll is the angular motion itself; sway is the amplitude of that roll. The two terms are sometimes used interchangeably in casual speech, but engineers distinguish them: sway is a measure of displacement, while roll is the angle of rotation. Understanding sway is essential for suspension tuning, tire wear analysis, and the diagnosis of handling complaints.
