A tackle block is a wooden or metal frame, usually rectangular, that houses one or more pulleys (called sheaves) and has a hook or shackle attachment at one or both ends. The block holds the sheaves in precise alignment so a rope can run under tension without binding or jumping the groove. The frame itself distributes load across the supporting structure, whether that is a fixed beam, a moving crane hook, or another block in a system.

The real work of a tackle block is to change the direction of a rope and, when two or more blocks are used together (in what is called a tackle or purchase), to create a mechanical advantage. A single block simply redirects the load; a pair of blocks, with rope threaded between them in the right pattern, can halve the force needed to lift a weight, or quarter it with four sheaves, at the cost of pulling more rope length. This is why you see blocks everywhere in rigging, ship work, and heavy construction.

Construction and varieties

Traditional blocks are built from hardwood (oak, ash, or maple) with metal binding straps and a metal sheave axle. Modern blocks use cast iron, steel, or aluminium frames. The number of sheaves ranges from one to four, sometimes six in heavy chain blocks. Double blocks carry two sheaves stacked side by side; treble blocks have three. The rope diameter the block accepts determines its size class, typically ranging from 8 mm to 50 mm or larger for industrial work. The sheave itself is a cast iron wheel with a grooved rim, usually bronze-bushed for rope, or roller-bearing equipped for chain.

Tackle blocks fail most often when the rope is too large for the sheave groove (crushing the rope and breaking the block) or too small (allowing it to jump and jam). Sheave bearings wear and seize if not maintained; corrosion eats wood bindings and metal straps in salt or damp conditions. Overload causes the frame to crack or the axle to bend. The hook or shackle eye can also crack under sudden jerks rather than smooth lifts.

The name comes from the verb tackle, meaning to seize or grapple, and reflects its role in seizing and moving heavy objects. In older rigging language, a single block on a fixed support is called a fixed block; one attached to the load being lifted is a movable block. The efficiency of a tackle (the ratio of the pull needed to the weight lifted) depends entirely on how you thread the rope through the block arrangement, not on the blocks themselves.
