A taker-off was a mine worker stationed at the bottom of a self-acting incline, responsible for detaching loaded wagons from the rope system once they reached the end of their descent. The job was common in coal and metal mines where inclined tramways moved ore or coal downslope under gravity, controlled by a brake mechanism or counterweight system. The taker-off worked at a fixed point, releasing each arriving car quickly so the next loaded wagon could be sent down and the empty car hauled back up.
Self-acting inclines operated on a simple principle: loaded cars moving downslope provided enough weight to pull empty cars upslope via a shared rope. The taker-off's role was essential to maintaining the cycle. As each car arrived at the bottom terminal, the worker would disengage the coupling or unhook the rope connection, allowing the car to roll clear or into a collection area. On some systems, the taker-off then pushed or guided the empty car back toward the loading point, or repositioned it for the return journey up the slope.
Hazards and pace
The job carried real dangers. Cars arriving at speed could derail or swing unexpectedly. The coupling mechanisms could pinch fingers or hands if the worker was not positioned correctly. The work was repetitive and time-critical; if a taker-off worked too slowly, the entire incline system would jam, stopping production. Rope breakage was also a hazard, as a snapped line could whip or send a loaded car careening downslope.The term 'taker-off' appears in mining records from the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly in British collieries and metal mines in Wales and the Midlands. Similar roles existed in quarries and slate workings. The name derives directly from the action: taking off, or removing, the car from the active transport system. Other names for similar roles included 'coupleman' or 'uncoupler', depending on regional practice and the exact mechanism used.
As mines modernized and mechanized, the self-acting incline system and the taker-off role declined. By the mid-20th century, electric-powered conveyor systems and locomotive haulage had replaced most gravity-powered inclines in active mines. The occupation became obsolete, though the term persists in historical mining records and heritage mining sites.
