A tank wagon is a specialized railway vehicle built around a large cylindrical or oval tank, typically made of steel, that carries liquid or liquefied gas cargo. The tank itself, which can hold anywhere from 10,000 to 35,000 litres depending on design and commodity, is mounted on a sturdy frame with two or more wheel sets. The whole assembly is coupled to other cars in a freight train and pulled by a locomotive.

Tank wagons are classified by their contents and construction. Pressurized versions with thicker walls and safety domes carry liquefied petroleum gas or chlorine; non-pressurized types move crude oil, fuel oils, water, milk, juice, wine, and chemicals. Some have internal baffles that slow the movement of liquid during braking to prevent surging and derailment. Specialized variants include heated tanks for products that solidify in cold weather, and insulated tanks for temperature-sensitive goods like bitumen or molasses.

Tank wagons connect via couplers at each end and ride on standard gauge track (1,435 mm in most of Europe and Asia, 1,435 mm in much of North America). Loading and unloading is done through top-mounted or side-mounted connections; pumping typically takes 30 minutes to several hours depending on product and flow rates. The center of gravity of a full tank wagon is higher than a traditional boxcar, which affects how quickly trains can navigate curves safely.

Maintenance is critical because interior corrosion, sediment buildup, and valve deterioration create safety risks and contamination. Every few years, wagons must be internally cleaned and inspected; some operators use pig launchers (scrapers pushed through by compressed air or liquid pressure) to remove deposits. Regulatory standards in most countries mandate regular pressure tests and certification before a tank wagon can return to service.

The name derives simply from the tank that forms its core; unlike a flatbed or gondola, the cargo container is integral to the wagon itself. Tank wagons are essential for bulk liquid movement in heavy industry, petrochemicals, food processing, and agriculture. They reduce per-unit shipping costs compared to road tankers because a single locomotive can move dozens of wagons at once, though much slower than road transport and only on rail infrastructure.
