Tape out is the moment when an integrated circuit design transitions from the engineering workbench to the fabrication plant. The term originates from the era when circuit layouts were literally transferred onto magnetic tape for delivery to mask shops; today the data travels digitally, but the name persists. At tape out, the design is locked. No more changes. The photomasks that will expose silicon wafers through multiple lithography steps are sent for production, committing the company to the cost of tool time, chemicals, and physical materials.

Before tape out arrives, design teams verify the circuit layout against the schematic, run design rule checks to catch spacing and width violations, and simulate electrical performance across process corners and temperature ranges. Power distribution networks are analyzed. Clock timing is validated. In modern designs at 5 nanometer nodes and below, design rule checking has become extraordinarily complex, involving machine learning models and years of foundry-specific tuning. A single tape out for a large system-on-chip can involve billions of transistors and millions of dollars at stake.

Once masks are made, a test run of wafers is typically produced in what foundries call a "test shuttle" or "MPW" (multiproject wafer) before full production. This initial silicon comes back in weeks to months. Design teams probe actual die with needles, measure parametric performance, and look for systematic failures. If the design fails electrical testing, the error may be unfixable without a full redesign and a second tape out, a catastrophic delay in product schedules.

Tape out represents the boundary between iterative software-like design work and the physics and economics of semiconductor fabrication. Before it, changes are nearly free. After it, they become impossibly expensive. Teams often plan multiple tape-outs within a product generation, sometimes reserving small portions of die area for experimental circuits as a hedge against uncertain yields or performance.

The term is used as both noun and verb within the industry: "we have tape out next Tuesday" or "the tape-out package is ready." It signals a project milestone and a hard deadline. For energy and utilities companies deploying power electronics, the chip vendors they rely on often announce tape outs for the next-generation converter or protection IC. Understanding when a supplier has taped out a new design helps utilities forecast when improved efficiency or reliability features will reach production hardware.
