A teraampere (TA) is a unit of electrical current equal to 1012 amperes, or one trillion amperes. It follows the SI prefix system where tera denotes the multiplier 1012, placing it far above practical measurement in industrial settings. The symbol is TA.

No equipment in current use generates, conducts, or measures teraamperes. The unit exists within the SI framework alongside other extreme prefixes like petaampere (1015 A) and exaampere (1018 A), but these remain theoretical constructs. For comparison, lightning strikes peak around 30,000 amperes; the largest industrial welding equipment operates below 1,000 amperes; and high-voltage transmission lines carry currents in the tens of thousands of amperes at most.

Why the unit exists

The teraampere appears in metrology and SI documentation because the SI system is built as a coherent whole, with prefixes covering the full span from yocto (10−24) to yotta (1024). Metrologists maintain this completeness even when certain combinations have no practical application. The unit may appear in theoretical physics, plasma physics simulations, or astrophysical calculations involving stellar currents or galactic magnetic phenomena.

In practical metrology and inspection work, you will never encounter a teraampere. Standard current measurement ranges from milliamps to kiloamperes. Clamp meters, shunts, and current transformers are calibrated in amperes, milliamps, or occasionally megaamps in research contexts. The teraampere remains a reference point in metrological standards documents rather than a working unit.
