Throwing is the process of centering and shaping clay on a potter's wheel to form hollow vessels. The potter applies pressure with hands and fingers as the clay rotates at 60 to 300 revolutions per minute, depending on the stage of work and the clay body being used. The spinning motion allows the clay to be drawn upward and outward into symmetrical forms: bowls, cylinders, plates, and closed forms. In industrial ceramics production, throwing remains the primary method for making large hollowware, even though it is labor-intensive compared to slip casting or jiggering.

The process begins with centering, in which the potter applies downward and inward pressure to stabilize the clay mass against the wheel head. This stage is critical; if centering fails, the clay will wobble and collapse under pressure. Once centered, the potter opens the form by pushing into the clay from the top, creating the interior space, then pulls the walls upward in one or several lifts. Each lift thins the wall and increases height; wall thickness typically ranges from 3 to 8 millimeters in production ceramics, depending on the intended final thickness after drying and firing.

Thrown pottery is cut from the wheel using a wire or wooden tool called a cutting wire, which passes under the base while the wheel is slowing. The piece is then set aside to firm up to a leather-hard state before trimming, turning, or attaching handles and spouts. Trimming shapes the foot and removes weight; turning (on an inverted wheel) refines the base and exterior profile. Industrial potteries use trim tools with fixed blade angles and stops to ensure consistency across batches.

Common defects in throwing include wall collapse from excessive speed or pressure, cracks from uneven drying, and wobble marks from poor centering. Thick bases trap moisture and cause cracking during drying; thin walls may break during handling or transport. Production throwers are trained to feel the clay rather than watch it, developing muscle memory for pressure, lift speed, and wheel speed adjustment throughout the form.

The term 'throw' derives from Old English 'thrawan', meaning to twist or turn. In pottery, it has described wheel work for centuries, predating industrial production. Today it distinguishes hand-formed vessels from those made by casting, pressing, or jiggering, even though throwing in large potteries involves repetitive, semi-mechanized technique rather than the studio ceramicist's creative variation. A thrower's output in production settings can reach 50 to 150 pieces per day, depending on form complexity and clay body workability.
