creamware: the earthenware that displaced tin-glazed pottery
Creamware is a lead-glazed earthenware with a pale buff or cream body, fired at temperatures between 1100 and 1150 degrees Celsius. It emerged from Staffordshire potteries in the mid-eighteenth century as a cheaper, more durable alternative to tin-glazed earthenware and Chinese porcelain. The cream color came from using ball clays with low iron content, often mixed with calcined flint to reduce firing shrinkage and improve whiteness.
Wedgwood and his competitors refined the body formula throughout the 1750s and 1760s, achieving a smooth, non-porous surface through careful clay selection and lead glaze application. The glaze was applied as a powder suspended in water, then fired in a single operation. This single-fire method made creamware faster and cheaper to produce than tin-glazed pottery, which required a separate glaze kiln after the biscuit firing.
The material found immediate market acceptance because it resembled porcelain at a fraction of the cost, yet remained stronger and less prone to crazing than the tin-glazed wares it replaced. Manufacturers could press or turn it into thinner sections than earthenware had previously allowed. Decorators applied underglaze printing, hand-painting, and enameling directly to the cream surface with good adhesion.
Production variants and decline
Pearlware, introduced around 1779, was creamware with added cobalt oxide to mask yellowing and achieve a whiter appearance. This distinction mattered commercially but not chemically: both used lead glaze on a refined earthenware body. By 1820, English potteries were producing millions of pieces annually, but creamware and pearlware gradually lost market share to whiteware (made from kaolin-based stoneware clays) and bone china.The name itself reflects the unglazed body color before the lead glaze was applied. Potters called it cream-colored earthenware or cream-color to distinguish it from the darker red earthenware and white tin-glazed wares of earlier decades. Continental European potteries, particularly in France and Germany, copied the formula but rarely achieved the consistent pale tone of English production.
