top

A plug or conical block of wood with longitudinal grooves on its surface, in which the strands of the rope slide in the process of twisting.

A top is a tapered wooden block used in rope-making to guide and compress individual strands as they are twisted together. The block sits vertically in a rope walk, with its grooved surface catching each strand of the lay. As the strands spiral around the forming rope, they slide through these longitudinal grooves, which keep them evenly spaced and prevent them from binding or crossing over one another during the twist.

The tool takes its name from its position at the upper end of the twisting frame. Traditional tops are turned from hardwood like beech or elm, roughly conical or barrel-shaped, between 4 to 8 inches in height. The grooves, usually three to four in number depending on the rope count, are cut parallel to the axis and sized to match the diameter of the strands being worked. A good top will be smooth and wear evenly; a rough or damaged surface causes the strands to stick, creating weak spots or uneven tension in the finished rope.

The effectiveness of a top depends on its geometry and material. Too steep a taper and the strands jam; too shallow and they slip sideways. The grooves must be deep enough to guide without pinching, and the wood must be dense enough to resist the constant friction of working rope. In ship and sail lofts, rope-makers would often have several tops on hand, each sized for a different strand diameter or rope weight.

A top works in concert with other parts of the rope-making rig: the strands are fed in at the base, twisted by a rotating frame or hand-powered mechanism, and the top sits at the discharge point where the formed rope emerges. The grooves effectively act as a brake, controlling the rate at which strands feed into the lay and ensuring consistent twist. Without a top, strands would bunch, slip, or separate unevenly, producing inferior rope too weak for sailing or cargo work.

Modern industrialized rope production replaced the top with metal dies and rollers that do the same job more precisely and at higher speed. However, traditional rope-walks and small-scale makers still use wooden tops. The term persists in marine contexts as a marker of method and craft, even when the actual hardware has changed materials or function.
