topside: everything above the waterline on an offshore platform
On a floating offshore installation, the topside is the complete structure that sits on the deck, from the main production modules down to the smallest utility frame. It includes drilling equipment, separators, compressors, manifolds, control systems, living quarters, and helipad, all mounted on the deck structure of a FPSO, TLP, or semisubmersible vessel. The topside is designed, fabricated, and tested as a system before being installed onto the floating hull.
Topsides are typically constructed in modules or sections at onshore fabrication yards, then transported by heavy lift vessel to the installation site. A large topside can weigh 5,000 to 30,000 tonnes or more, depending on the field development. The modules are connected together on deck through structural frames, pipe racks, cable trays, and utility systems. Modularization reduces offshore construction time and improves quality control, since most assembly and testing happens in the controlled environment of the yard.
Design and operational constraints
Topside design must balance equipment requirements against weight, footprint, and the stability limits of the floating vessel beneath it. The centre of gravity of the topside directly affects the overall stability and motion response of the installation. Corrosion is a constant threat in the salt spray environment; most topside steelwork is coated with multiple layers of paint or epoxy, and critical items are specified in duplex or super duplex stainless steel. Seawater cooling loops, firewater systems, and drainage all must be integrated into the topside layout.
Access, egress, and maintenance drive the physical layout as much as process requirements do. Crane pads and lifting points must be specified for removing and replacing large items like centrifugal compressors without mobilizing an external heavy lift vessel. Walkways, handrails, and emergency refuge areas are mandated by classification societies and flag state regulations. Noise and vibration from rotating equipment must be managed through isolation mounts and enclosures to keep accommodation areas habitable.
The term topside originated in the shipbuilding and offshore industry to distinguish the visible, accessible deck structures from the hull and subsea systems. A topside is not a single component but an integrated assembly; damage to or replacement of a topside can require a major capital project and offshore shutdown. For this reason, topside integrity inspections, coating renewal, and equipment life extension are high priorities in the operation and maintenance phase of any floating installation.
