Topsoil is the uppermost layer of soil, typically 2 to 8 inches deep, where most plant roots concentrate and where the bulk of biological activity occurs. It differs from subsoil beneath it by having higher organic matter content, better structure, and greater microbial populations. This is where seeds germinate, roots establish, and nutrients become available to plants.

The fertility of topsoil comes from decomposed organic material, mineral particles weathered from parent rock, and living organisms: bacteria, fungi, earthworms, and arthropods that break down organic matter and cycle nutrients. A healthy topsoil typically contains 5 to 10 percent organic matter by weight, though this varies by climate and land use. Dark color usually indicates higher organic content; pale or gray topsoil often signals degradation or poor drainage.

Topsoil loss and management

Erosion removes topsoil faster than it forms naturally, which takes decades to centuries depending on climate and parent material. Water runoff from heavy rain or snowmelt, wind on bare ground, and tillage all accelerate topsoil loss. A single inch of topsoil can be lost in months under poor management but takes 20 to 40 years to rebuild in temperate regions. This loss reduces both immediate yield potential and long-term productive capacity.

Conservation practices include minimum or no-till farming to reduce disturbance, cover cropping to protect bare soil and add organic matter, contour plowing on slopes, and windbreaks. Farmers and land managers also add compost or aged manure to rebuild organic content. Landscape contractors grade and stockpile topsoil during construction to preserve it or purchase new material from soil suppliers who blend subsoil with compost to create workable growing medium.

Topsoil is distinct from potting soil or garden soil sold in bags, which are manufactured blends of peat, compost, or coir with mineral soil and amendments. Field topsoil cannot be easily replicated in a bag because its fertility depends on established biological communities and weathered mineral fraction, not just ingredients mixed at the moment of sale.
