The process of removal of railway track, in particular from a railway line permanently closed to traffic.

Tracklifting is the systematic removal of railway track infrastructure, typically undertaken when a line has been permanently closed to traffic. The work involves extracting rails, sleepers (or ties), ballast, and associated fixings from the trackbed, leaving bare ground or prepared subgrade behind. This is distinct from routine maintenance or temporary track removal; it is a terminal operation signaling the end of a route's service life.

The process normally proceeds in a defined sequence. Work teams first isolate the line completely from any active network. Heavy machines then break the mechanical bonds between components: rail chairs (or direct fasteners on modern track) are unbolted, and sleepers are lifted clear. Rails are cut into manageable lengths, typically 10 to 20 metres, using rail saws or thermal cutting equipment. Sleepers are extracted by specialist lifting rigs. The ballast is then excavated, screened, and either reused or disposed of according to its condition and any environmental contamination present.

Materials and recovery value

Rails themselves are the primary salvage target, since they retain substantial scrap steel value. Sleeper composition determines reuse potential: wooden sleepers may contain creosote or other preservatives that restrict their disposal options; reinforced concrete sleepers are heavier and require specific equipment, but can often be recovered for use on heritage lines or in non-railway civil applications. Cast iron chairs and chairs made from steel are recovered separately. Fastenings, clips, and bolts are generally small-value bulk items but accumulate over long distances.

The economic viability of tracklifting depends on material values, distance to markets, and line length. A branch line of 20 kilometres may yield 200 tonnes of steel rail; a main line 50 kilometres long can yield 500 tonnes or more. Transport costs to scrapyards or recycling facilities are significant, so tracklifting contracts often target lines where material quantity justifies mobilization. Environmental considerations increasingly govern the work, particularly around sleeper disposal and soil remediation where ballast contamination is present.

Tracklifting differs fundamentally from temporary or partial disassembly. It is permanent, comprehensive, and driven by the closure of service rather than maintenance or renewal cycles. It represents the final phase of a railway asset's operational life and the beginning of land restoration or repurposing.
