A long arm that is used to suspend a bag to be dropped onto a passing train and which retracts automatically be means of a spring when the bag is dropped.

A traductor is a hinged mechanical arm, typically 1.5 to 2.5 metres long, that extends horizontally from a fixed post or gantry beside railway tracks. Its primary function is to suspend a mail bag or package at the precise height and angle needed for a train crew member to grab it as the train passes at speed, usually between 15 and 40 kilometres per hour. Once the bag is lifted free by the crew, a powerful coiled spring automatically retracts the arm back to its rest position against the post.

The arm itself is usually made of wrought iron or steel, with a hook or eye at its free end to support the suspension rope or wire. The spring mechanism, wound around or parallel to the arm's pivot point, stores enough energy to pull the arm back smartly after the load is removed. The tension must be calibrated carefully: too weak and the arm hangs limp after deployment; too strong and it snaps back dangerously if the crew fails to grab the bag cleanly.

Historical context and railway mail service

The traductor was essential to railway postal operations before mechanised sorting facilities became standard. Station staff or railway mail contractors would hang outgoing mail in a canvas or leather bag from the arm as the mail train approached. The mechanism eliminated the need for the train to stop, saving precious minutes on schedules that ran to tight margins. This system was particularly common on branch lines and smaller stations where a full mail depot was uneconomical.

The name derives from the Spanish and Latin root 'traducir', meaning to transfer or convey, which reflects the device's core purpose: transferring mail between fixed infrastructure and moving stock without interruption. Although most traducĀ­tors have fallen out of service as dedicated mail trains have disappeared and postal services have consolidated, some heritage railways and historical sites maintain them as functional demonstrations of railway-era logistics.

Wear and fatigue are the main failure modes. The spring loses tension over years of use, requiring replacement. The hinge point corrodes if not properly greased, and the rope or wire support can fray or snap if subjected to sudden jerks from a bag that is too heavy or grabbed too aggressively. Modern examples are rarely encountered on operating railways, making them primarily objects of technical and social history.
