A passenger mile counts as one unit each time one passenger travels one mile on a train. A ton mile counts as one unit each time one short ton of freight travels one mile. If a railroad carries 100 passengers thirty miles and 500 tons of coal fifty miles in the same week, the traffic miles total is (100 × 30) + (500 × 50) = 28,000 traffic miles. The calculation makes sense only if you already know the passenger and freight components separately; the sum itself obscures which mode generated which portion of the work.
Why the metric matters in railroad economics
Traffic miles serve as the denominator in key performance ratios. Dividing operating costs by traffic miles yields a cost per traffic mile figure that allows year-to-year comparison even when the mix of passengers and freight shifts. It also lets management compare performance across routes or time periods without having to track two separate metrics. Regulatory bodies historically used traffic miles to assess whether a rail line was economically viable and worth maintaining.
The weakness of the traffic mile is that it assigns no weight to profitability, distance, or mode of service. One hundred passengers on a local commuter run and one hundred tons of bulk coal on a long-haul freight route can generate wildly different revenue and margin, yet traffic miles counts them identically if distances are equal.
