In mining exploration and development, to train a lode means to trace its course upslope toward higher ground, working backward along the direction of mineralisation to locate its source or apex. This is primarily a surface and near-surface technique used to understand the geometry and continuity of an ore body before committing to expensive underground development.
Trained lodes often run downhill in the landscape, either dipping steeply or following natural fracture zones. By following float material, exposed vein segments, or subtle topographic breaks downslope, miners reverse the process and train the lode upward to find where mineralization begins, thickens, or terminates. This work is done on foot with geological maps, hand tools, and sample bags. The lode may peter out entirely, remain visible as scattered float, or connect to another mineralised feature, each outcome affecting how a prospect is valued.
Training is especially important in alluvial and colluvial terrain where weathering and gravity have moved ore fragments downhill from their original position. A miner finding rich specimens in a creek bed will train the material upstream to the outcrop or vein that shed it. In some cases, the trained lode leads to a richer, higher-grade zone than the lower exposures suggested.
The term also applies in reverse: trainers may work downhill to connect scattered observations and build a mental model of how the mineralisation behaves across a slope. The word training derives from the sense of following a track or trail, as though the lode itself leaves a trail for the geologist to read.
Successful training requires knowledge of local geology, weathering patterns, and ore behaviour in the specific climate and rock type. It is often one of the first tasks in a grassroots exploration program, conducted before any drilling or formal surveying begins. The cost is low but the information can be decisive: a well-trained lode may become a drill target, while a lode that cannot be trained uphill may be abandoned as too scattered or too deep to pursue economically.
