In telecommunications, transmissible describes any signal, data, or information capable of traveling from a source through a medium to a destination. The term is not about the act of transmission itself, but rather the fundamental property of whether something can be conveyed at all through a given system, at a given frequency, or under specific conditions. A voice call is transmissible over a copper telephone line; a megahertz-range signal may not be transmissible over the same circuit without attenuation rendering it unrecoverable at the receiver.

Transmissible depends entirely on the bandwidth, impedance matching, and signal-to-noise ratio of the channel in use. A signal at 2 GHz is not transmissible through standard coaxial cable designed for video frequencies without severe loss. Similarly, a digital bitstream at 10 Gbps is not transmissible over twisted pair copper more than a few meters without error correction or line coding. Engineers must verify that intended content falls within the transmissible range of the medium before deployment.

Transmissible versus transmitted

The distinction matters. A signal may be transmissible, yet remain untransmitted if no source is active. Conversely, attempting to transmit a signal outside the transmissible window results in corruption or total loss. Standards documents specify which frequencies, modulation schemes, and data rates are transmissible over each medium: Cat6 cabling is rated transmissible to 10 Gbps; older Cat5e to 1 Gbps reliably, though higher rates are theoretically possible over short runs.

Transmissible also applies to interference, noise, and unwanted signals. Electromagnetic fields at 50 Hz are highly transmissible through power distribution cable jackets, which is why telecommunications wiring must maintain physical separation from mains conductors. Disease vectors in infection control use the term similarly: a pathogen transmissible through aerosol differs from one transmissible only by direct contact, analogous to how a signal may be transmissible in one environment but not another.

When a channel is said to be non-transmissible for a particular signal, the remedy involves either modifying the signal (lower data rate, different encoding) or upgrading the medium. This distinction is foundational to system design: before purchasing hardware or planning network routes, engineers must first establish that their intended traffic is actually transmissible over the proposed path.
