A trap crop is a cultivated plant grown specifically to lure agricultural pests away from a neighboring cash crop or protected area. It acts as a sacrificial buffer, concentrating pest populations on expendable vegetation so that primary crops suffer less damage. The trap crop itself may be destroyed, incorporated into soil, or harvested for feed or compost once its work is done.

The selection of trap crop species depends on pest behavior and attraction. For example, mustard and radish plantings draw cabbage aphids and flea beetles away from brassica fields. Squash varieties attract squash bugs and cucumber beetles that would otherwise target primary melon or cucumber crops. Marigolds and nasturtiums concentrate aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites. The trap crop must be more attractive to the target pest than the cash crop, which often means planting it closer to pest entry points or in higher concentration than would occur naturally.

Trap crops work best in integrated pest management (IPM) systems rather than as standalone solutions. They reduce pest pressure enough to lower chemical inputs but rarely eliminate pests entirely. Timing matters: the trap crop must be established and attractive before peak pest activity. Once pests colonize the trap crop heavily, the infested plants may be tilled under, removed, or treated selectively with pesticides at lower cost than protecting the entire field. Some operations use a rolling trap crop strategy, planting new rows as established ones become saturated with pests.

The effectiveness depends on landscape factors. In open fields with dispersed plantings, pests may find the cash crop before encountering the trap crop. Border placement, surrounding barriers, and trap crop vigor all influence success. Perennial trap plantings around field edges work better than annual interplanting in some systems but require longer establishment periods. Weather, pest lifecycle, and natural enemy populations also influence outcomes.

Trap crops are sometimes confused with cover crops or sacrificial rows, but the distinction matters. A trap crop is grown specifically for pest attraction; a sacrificial row is a strip of primary crop allowed to sustain pest damage to protect the rest. Cover crops serve soil health and are incidental pest deterrents. The terminology reflects the intentional strategy of luring rather than protecting.
