Tusking is a woodworking joint where a protruding rectangular block, called a tusk, is cut on the end grain of one board and fits into a corresponding mortise (slot) cut into the face or edge of another board. The tusk typically sits perpendicular to the board it projects from, and when driven home, it creates a mechanical lock that can be tightened by driving a wedge through a hole bored through the joint. This is a traditional method for joining timbers under tension, particularly where a horizontal beam meets a vertical post or wall.

The tusk itself is usually a rectangular prism, often 2 to 4 inches wide and 1.5 to 3 inches deep depending on the timber size and expected load. The mortise into which it fits must be cut with enough precision to allow the tusk to seat fully without rocking. The depth of the mortise determines how much the tusk can project into the adjoining timber, and this dimension controls the strength of the joint. When the tusk bottoms out in the mortise, the bearing surfaces must be flush for the joint to perform properly.

Wedging and Tightening

A hole is typically bored through both the tusk and the mortise walls perpendicular to the tusk's length. A wooden wedge is driven through this hole to apply clamping pressure, drawing the two boards tightly together and preventing the tusk from backing out under load or vibration. This wedge must be made from a material harder than the tusk itself, otherwise repeated hammer blows will crush it and the joint will loosen. The wedge is driven in only as far as necessary to create firm contact; over-driving can split the tusk or the surrounding wood.

Tusking appears most often in heavy timber construction, mill frames, and historic bridge joinery, where it was used to join beams to posts or posts to sills. The joint can accommodate seasonal wood movement better than some alternatives because the mortise is open on one side, allowing the tusk to slide slightly if the wood shrinks or swells across the grain. This flexibility made it reliable in outdoor structures and in buildings with wide temperature swings.

The name comes directly from the appearance of the protruding block, which resembles an animal's tusk or tooth. Modern timber framers still use tusking in restoration work and in new construction where traditional joinery is required, though the joint has largely been replaced in production carpentry by bolts, lag screws, and metal hardware. Hand tool skill, particularly with the mortise chisel and saw, is essential for cutting a proper tusking joint, making it less common in workshops that have moved entirely to machine-based methods.
