try-miter square: two angles in one tool
A try-miter square is a single steel tool that combines the functions of a 90-degree try square and a 45-degree miter square. The head is a thick casting, usually of ductile iron or aluminum alloy, with two working faces machined at right angles to each other. One face is perpendicular to the blade (the 90-degree try function); the other is set at 45 degrees, allowing you to mark or test miter joints without reaching for a second tool.
The blade itself is a flat steel ruler, typically 12 inches long, with a beveled or squared edge. It slides into a slot in the head and locks with a thumbscrew or lever. The 45-degree face is cut into one corner of the head at a chamfer, so you can rest the blade against it to mark angles for picture frames, molding joints, or roof pitches without flipping tools. The 90-degree face works like any try square: check cabinet faces, mark crosscuts, test rabbet shoulders.
Because this tool must hold two distinct angles accurately, the head is heavier and thicker than a simple try square. This adds heft that some carpenters like for drawing straight lines under pressure, but others find cumbersome when speed matters. The thumbscrew lock requires periodic tightening; a loose blade will drift and spoil your marks. Steel blades are more durable than cast-in designs but can be replaced if bent or dinged.

A try-miter square is most useful in finish carpentry and joinery where 45-degree cuts appear regularly. In rough framing, a simple try square and a speed square do the job faster. Historically, this tool became common in the early 20th century as a way to reduce clutter in small jobsite toolbags. Today it competes with adjustable bevel squares, which can be set to any angle but require more care to hold a precise setting.The name reflects its dual purpose plainly: it is a try square (testing and marking 90-degree angles) that also serves as a miter square (working with 45-degree angles).
