A letter or character used for printing, historically a cast or engraved block.

In letterpress printing, type is a small block of metal, typically lead alloy, with a raised character on its upper end. When inked and pressed onto paper, that raised surface transfers the letter or symbol. Each piece of type represents one character: a single letter, numeral, punctuation mark, or space. The printer assembles individual pieces of type into lines and pages to compose a complete document for printing.

Metal type comes in standardized heights, typically 0.918 inches (the type height), so pieces can be locked together in a forme, the rigid frame that holds composed text. The body of the type, called the shank, sits below the printing surface; its width varies by character. An 'M' is wider than an 'i', so each character occupies proportional space. The depth of metal below the raised letter is called the beard; too shallow and paper touches the unprinted shank; too deep and ink fails to reach fine details.

Type metals are harder than pure lead because lead alone would wear and deform quickly under the pressure and friction of repeated printing. Standard metal type is an alloy of lead, tin, and antimony, formulated to be hard enough to survive thousands of impressions. Historical foundries tuned these ratios carefully: more antimony increased hardness at the cost of making the metal more brittle and difficult to cast cleanly.

Variants and challenges

Type comes in hundreds of typefaces and sizes, from 4-point (tiny, barely readable) to 72-point and larger (display type). Each size and style requires its own matrix and mould at the type foundry, which cast the individual pieces. Wood type, larger and used for posters and display work, was common for sizes above 72-point because metal became impractical. Steel type, harder than lead alloy, extended press life for high-volume jobs but was more expensive and difficult to hand-compose.

The main wear point is the printing surface: repeated contact with paper, ink roller, and impression force gradually flattens and dulls the raised letter. Badly worn type produces faint or broken impressions. Damage also comes from clumsy handling during composition: dropped pieces may chip or bend, and type exposed to dampness or poor storage can corrode. A printer who maintained type carefully could expect serviceable life measured in years; neglected type failed quickly.
