In ore dressing and mineral processing, a van is a flat-bottomed shovel with a wide, shallow blade, purpose-built for washing and classifying ore by hand. The shape, wider than a standard digging shovel and less deep, allows the operator to agitate ore in water or to separate heavy mineral particles from lighter waste material as material moves across a shallow wash pan or sloping surface.

The van is fundamentally a tool of gravity separation. When loaded with wet ore and worked in a rocking or circular motion, denser ore particles settle to the bottom of the blade while lighter gangue (waste rock) and slimes wash toward the edges or run off. This simple mechanical action was, and in small-scale and artisanal operations still is, the first stage of ore beneficiation before fine crushing and chemical separation became the norm. The blade's flatness and slight upturn at the sides contain the material, while the handle length (typically 4 to 5 feet) gives leverage for sustained work.

Variants and regional names

The van appears in historical mining terminology across English-speaking mining regions, particularly in copper, tin, and precious metal extraction where hand sorting and washing were routine. Related tools include the cradle or rocker box, which performs similar work with ore-bearing sediment and employs gravitational and water flow principles. In some districts the tool is called a wash shovel or ore shovel, though van remains the standard technical term in mineral processing literature.

Modern industrial mineral processing has largely replaced hand vanning with mechanical classifiers, jigs, and centrifuges, which achieve finer separation at higher throughput. However, vanning survives in small-scale mining, geological sampling, and alluvial recovery operations where equipment footprint or capital cost makes manual methods practical. Prospectors also use pans, shallow, rimmed metal dishes, for the same work, and the technique is nearly identical to vanning.

The term van itself appears in mining records from at least the 18th century and likely derives from the Dutch wanne or German Wanne, meaning tub or pan, reflecting the shared mining terminology across Northern European and maritime trade traditions. Understanding the van places a worker in the history of ore dressing: it is the hand tool that came before the machine, the proof that gravity and water, applied with skill and repetition, can separate value from waste.
