A veneer saw is a hand tool with a short, rigid blade mounted in a handle, designed specifically to crosscut thin sheets of wood veneer along the grain. The blade runs between 4 and 6 inches long, typically 1 to 1.5 inches wide, and features teeth on both edges. One edge usually cuts on the push stroke, the other on the pull stroke, allowing the operator to work in either direction without repositioning the tool or the stock.

The double-edged design reflects veneer work's practical constraint: veneer sheets are brittle and prone to splintering. A veneer saw cuts cleanly on both strokes because the teeth are angled to shear the thin material rather than tear it. The blade thickness runs between 0.035 and 0.045 inches, thin enough to minimize kerf loss on expensive stock, yet stiff enough not to bend when crosscutting hardwoods like walnut, mahogany, or teak. The handle sits low relative to the blade, giving the operator fine control and a shallow cutting angle.

Veneer saws perform two main tasks. They trim edges after veneer sheets have been glued to a substrate, cutting away excess material flush with the groundwork edge. They also cut veneer into smaller pieces for marquetry work or to fit around obstacles like table legs. The tool works fastest on cross-grain cuts; ripping veneer along the grain creates more tearout and demands slower, more deliberate strokes.

Where it sits in the trade

Veneer saws occupy a narrow space between utility knives and veneer chisels. A sharp utility knife works for rough trimming, but lacks the control and produces more splintering. Veneer chisels excel at final edge cleanup but cannot make interior cuts or trim long runs efficiently. The veneer saw bridges these tasks. In modern shops, high-speed routers with carbide bits have partly displaced veneer saws for edge trimming, yet the hand tool remains standard for work where dust and noise matter, for curved edges, and for restoring furniture where power tools risk damage.

The tool's name comes directly from its material and function: a saw for cutting veneer. Its design has remained essentially unchanged for over a century because the task itself has not fundamentally changed. Quality veneer saws are made from spring steel with hardened and tempered teeth, and demand regular sharpening to remain effective. Dull teeth tear rather than cut, generating the crushing damage that ruins veneer work.
