quartersaw: cutting wood to fight seasonal movement
Quartersawing is a milling technique where a log is cut along radial planes that pass through or near the center, so the annual growth rings run roughly perpendicular to the wide face of each board. Unlike plainsawing, which follows the tangent of the rings and produces the fastest yield, quartersawing deliberately wastes material to achieve specific grain orientations and wood movement characteristics.
The primary reason woodworkers and furniture makers quartersaw is dimensional stability. When growth rings run perpendicular to a board's width, seasonal wood movement across the grain is minimized. A quartersawn oak or cherry tabletop will expand and contract less noticeably with humidity changes than a plainsawn one. This matters enormously in fine furniture, where movement can crack joints, lift veneers, or distort panels over years. The trade-off is cost: quartersawing a log yields far fewer usable boards per log than plainsawing, so quartersawn lumber commands a significant premium.
Quartersawing also produces distinctive visual grain patterns. In species like white oak, quartersawing exposes medullary rays (radial cell structure) as prominent flake figures running perpendicular to the growth rings. These ray flecks are highly valued in decorative work. In other woods such as soft maple, the effect is more subtle but still recognizable to the trained eye. The grain is often straighter and more uniform than in plainsawn material, which many consider more refined aesthetically.
Sawing patterns and yield
A log can be quartersawn using several methods. The most direct approach involves making a radial cut from bark to center, then sawing perpendicular to that line. More commonly, mills make multiple cuts from the log's edge toward the heart, progressively rotating the log. Each method sacrifices the center portions and the outer edges as slabs. A log that might yield 40 to 50 percent recovery in plainsawing often yields only 20 to 30 percent in quartersawing, depending on log diameter and the care taken to maintain angle.
Quartersawing is labor and time intensive, so it remains concentrated in small mills, custom sawyers, and high-end furniture makers. Industrial production typically reserves quartersawing for premium grades or species where the grain figure or stability genuinely commands higher prices. In construction lumber and rough stock, plainsawing dominates. The term itself has been in use since at least the 19th century, when hand and pit sawing made the distinction between grain orientations economically meaningful to every woodworker.
