A washout is a cavity or void in a mineral deposit where underground water flow has dissolved, eroded, or carried away ore and surrounding rock. It appears in the geological record as a conspicuous absence, a zone where the expected ore grade drops sharply or vanishes entirely. Washouts form naturally over geological time in mines worked in sedimentary or weathered deposits, and they create real problems for mine planning and ore accounting.
The mechanism is straightforward: water moves along cracks, bedding planes, and permeable zones within the orebody. If the ore or the matrix rock is soluble or weakly cemented, the water dissolves or entrains it, leaving behind a pocket of waste rock, clay, or void space. Iron oxide ores, copper carbonates, and salt-bearing formations are particularly vulnerable. The size of a washout can range from a few centimetres to several metres across, and it may extend tens of metres along a drainage path.
Washouts are discovered during active mining, usually by drill core logging or face mapping. Their boundaries are often sharp and irregular. In open pit operations, they complicate stripping calculations and ore scheduling. In underground mines, they create zones of loose material that may collapse or require selective waste handling. Ore loss estimation becomes uncertain because the true extent of a washout may not be visible until mining has progressed several metres.
The term originates from the literal washing out of ore by water action. In historical hard rock and alluvial operations, miners recognized that natural water drainage created zones of missing or low-grade material. The word has remained in use because the phenomenon is common enough and damaging enough to warrant its own name in mine geology and production planning.
Washouts differ from other voids by their causal origin: they are erosional, not structural. A stope cavity or a mine collapse produces a void but not necessarily a washout. Understanding whether a void is a washout or has another origin matters for mine dewatering strategy, safe access, and ore recovery planning.
