A washpit is a recessed or sunken channel filled with flowing water, built into the ground or a concrete floor, through which cattle, sheep, or other livestock are driven or herded to remove dirt, mud, dung, and external parasites. The animals either wade through the pit or are sometimes ducked partially submerged as they pass through, depending on the design and the parasite load being treated. The flowing water carries away loose material and helps dislodge ticks, lice, and mites from the animal's hide and legs.

Washpits are typically constructed from concrete, stone, or rammed earth, and are usually 4 to 8 feet long, 2 to 4 feet wide, and 1 to 3 feet deep. Water supply comes from a stream, spring, pump system, or rainwater collection; constant flow is essential to prevent the water from becoming stagnant and filthy after the first few animals pass through. Exit ramps with grooved or textured surfaces allow wet animals to leave without slipping. Many older pits in pastoral regions lack any chemical treatment, relying entirely on the mechanical action of water and the animal's own movement to loosen parasites.

Beyond simple cleaning, the washpit serves as a delivery mechanism for livestock dip. When connected to a circulation system mixing parasiticide or acaricide into the water, the pit becomes a low-labour alternative to hand-spraying or pour-on treatments, particularly valuable on farms with hundreds of head. The soaking action ensures better coverage of the skin than surface spraying alone. Water temperature affects efficacy; cold water reduces effectiveness and causes animal stress, so pits in cooler climates are sometimes fed by heated supply or allowed to absorb solar warmth.

Decline and persistence

Washpits are now rare in intensive dairy and feedlot operations, displaced by more precise dosing methods, portable crush handling systems, and pour-on dips. They persist mainly on extensive pastoral farms in regions where large herds move between pastures regularly and dipping infrastructure is already in place. A washpit requires significant capital investment, reliable water year-round, and a layout that channels livestock through the structure during mustering, which limits its use on farms with scattered grazing or scattered water sources.

The term itself reflects the vernacular naming of outdoor infrastructure: the pit is quite literally a hole where washing occurs. Regional variants include dip tanks (closed or semi-enclosed versions), swim baths (deeper pits for larger immersion), and sprinkling races (overhead delivery systems in covered runs). Maintenance is demanding: sediment accumulation, algae growth, and livestock waste must be managed, or the pit becomes ineffective and a source of disease. In arid or seasonal-water zones, a broken water supply renders the pit useless within days.
