A waterproof barrier that is used to prevent moisture from leaking through a joint.

A waterstop is an impermeable strip, usually made of rubber or PVC, installed across concrete joints to block water penetration. It sits within the joint itself, embedded in concrete on both sides, and acts as a physical barrier against moisture migration. Waterstops are essential in basements, tunnels, water treatment plants, and any structure where concrete joints must remain dry under hydrostatic pressure.

The material is typically 3 to 6 millimeters thick and comes in widths from 100 to 300 millimeters. Most waterstops have a dumbbell or ribbed profile with a central bulge that creates a tortuous path for water to follow if it tries to seep through. The rubber used is usually chloroprene (neoprene) or EPDM, while PVC versions are more rigid and cost less. Both types remain flexible enough to accommodate minor concrete movements without tearing or pulling free.

Installation happens at the time of casting. Workers position the waterstop centered across the joint plane and secure it with steel chairs or concrete formwork so it cannot shift during placement. The concrete must surround the strip fully; voids or air pockets around the waterstop render it useless. At construction joints, the waterstop bridges from one concrete pour to the next; at movement joints, it must be allowed to flex without restraint.

Waterstops fail when they are installed off-center, when concrete does not bond properly to the material, or when they are damaged during placement. Holes or punctures in the strip defeat its purpose entirely. Poor detailing at the edges, where the waterstop meets a wall or floor, can create bypass paths. Cold joints and incomplete concrete coverage are the leading cause of water leakage past installed waterstops.

The term itself is direct: it stops water. Architects and engineers specify waterstops in construction documents alongside joint spacing and concrete mix design. On large projects, waterstop installation and concrete finishing around it often fall to the concrete contractor rather than to waterproofing specialists, which can lead to installation defects if site supervision is inadequate. Quality control inspections before concrete placement are the only reliable way to verify correct positioning.
