A windboard is a curved or angled board mounted on the cutting header of a combine harvester, positioned to block crosswinds from deflecting freshly cut grain away from the gathering auger and conveyor system. As the header cuts standing crop, the grain falls loose and must travel reliably into the machine; side winds can scatter this material before it is gathered, resulting in direct harvest loss. The windboard acts as a baffle, protecting the cut swath from wind interference during the critical moments between cutting and conveyance into the combine.
Windboards are typically made from sheet metal, hardboard, or composite materials and are adjustable in angle and sometimes in height. Their effectiveness depends partly on harvest speed, wind direction, and grain moisture; dry, lightweight grain is more prone to wind loss than moist crop. The board must not impede the flow of cut material or clog with chaff and broken stems, so design includes sufficient clearance and often incorporates sloped surfaces to encourage material toward the auger.
Design variation and context
Some headers use fixed windboards that run the full width of the cut swath; others employ segmented or hinged designs that can be adjusted for field conditions. The size and shape of the windboard must match the header width and the cutting mechanism (sickle bar or rotary), and it interacts with other header components such as the gathering chains or belts and the cutterbar itself. On narrow headers in light wind, windboards may be minimal; on wide headers (10 metres or more) cutting high-value or dry commodity, they become more substantial.
Wind loss during harvest can account for 2 to 10 percent of yield in exposed fields or windy seasons, making the windboard a simple but measurable design feature. Operators in chronically windy regions often verify that windboards are in place and properly angled, as these boards can wear, bend, or accumulate mud and residue that reduces their shielding effect.
