windbreak

A hedge, fence or row of trees positioned to reduce wind damage to crops.

A windbreak is a physical barrier, typically a row of trees, shrubs, or a constructed fence, placed perpendicular to prevailing winds to reduce air velocity across fields or facilities. In agriculture, the primary function is to lower wind speed at crop height, cutting both mechanical damage to plants and the drying effect of exposed wind on soil and foliage. Effectiveness depends on height, density, and placement: a windbreak reduces wind speed most significantly within a distance of about 20 times its height downwind, with maximum protection typically 2 to 5 times the barrier height behind it.

Natural windbreaks, usually planted hedgerows or shelterbelts, are rows of trees or shrubs chosen for hardiness and density. Species vary by region and climate: in temperate zones, conifers like spruce or fir hold foliage year-round; deciduous species may be used in rotation with annual crops. Constructed windbreaks include wooden slat fences, woven wire screens, or polycarbonate panels, common in nurseries and high-value crop areas. Each type trades permanence and low maintenance (trees) against faster establishment and flexibility (fencing).

Where windbreaks matter most

Windbreaks are essential in regions with sustained high winds: coastal areas, prairie regions, and alpine valleys. They protect transplanted seedlings from desiccation and lodging (toppling), reduce crop volatilization of moisture, and slow soil erosion in sandy or silty fields. Livestock operations use windbreaks to lower heating demand in winter housing and reduce stress-related illness in exposed pens. In orchards and vineyards, wind protection improves pollination efficiency and reduces fruit drop and sunscald.

A poorly designed or positioned windbreak creates problems: dense barriers without air gaps create wind vortices that actually increase turbulence downwind; trees that are too close to crop rows compete for water and nutrients; and gaps left unmaintained defeat the entire function. Windbreak maintenance requires attention to disease, pest colonization, and senescence of individual plants.

The term is sometimes narrowed to natural shelterbelts in formal agricultural language, but the function is identical whether the barrier is living or built. Its presence is nearly universal in mechanized agriculture in exposed regions, though often valued more for erosion control and wildlife habitat than as an explicit crop protection strategy.
